Verlia Mae Gable of Florence, AL, age 99, entered into her eternal home with her Lord and Savior on February 26, 2026, at Columbia Cottage, where she had been lovingly cared for and cherished for the past 15 years. She was born on November 21, 1926, in the small community of Cowpen. Verlia lived a long and beautiful life marked by faith, love, resilience, and joy.
Funeral services will be held at Greenview Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 3, 2026. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with the service immediately following. Burial will follow at Greenview Cemetery. The service will be officiated by Brother Mike Crews. Pallbearers will be Adam Abernathy, Tim Gable, Phillip Gable, Terry Hamm, Carl Hamm, and Trent Klinghard.
She was preceded in death by her father, William James “Bud” Roberson; her mother, Ivie Johannah Roberson; her beloved husband, Robert L. Gable, to whom she was faithfully married for 68 years; her son, Michael L. Gable; her brother, R. S. Roberson; and her sister, Lizzie Hamm.
Verlia’s greatest treasure was her family. She is survived by her son, Lowell Dwaine Gable; her daughter, Donna Gable Abernathy (Jimmy); and her five grandchildren, Melena Gable; Tim Gable (Tracy); Cindy Gable James; Adam Abernathy (Mary Alan); and Hannah Catherine Phillips (Dustin). She was blessed beyond measure with nine great-grandchildren—Phillip Gable (Sarah), Jessica Gable, Trinity Warren (Alex), Jordan James, Walt Abernathy, George Abernathy, Teddy Abernathy, Rylee-Mae Phillips, and Lincoln Phillips—and six great-great-grandchildren—Lucas Gable, Sutton Gable, Ian Warren, Lucas Warren, June Warren, and Liam Konig.
She loved her family deeply and completely. Each child, grandchild, great-grandchild, and great-great-grandchild was a source of immense pride and joy. She cherished every visit, every conversation, and every moment spent together. She never missed an opportunity to offer encouragement, share her wisdom, or remind her family how deeply they were loved. Her life was rooted in her family, and the legacy she leaves behind lives on through each of them. She nurtured them, prayed for them, believed in them, and shaped their lives with her faith and kindness.
Verlia devoted many years as a homemaker, creating a home filled with warmth, comfort, and unconditional love. Later, she worked at Forest Hills Elementary as a lunchroom lady, where she continued her life of service. She was more than someone who served meals—she served smiles, kindness, and care to every child who passed her way. Her gentle spirit and warm presence left a lasting impression on generations of students.
She found joy in life’s simple and meaningful moments. She loved sewing, crafting, making jewelry, crocheting, and cooking for those she loved. Her peanut brittle and Mexican cornbread became treasured family favorites, made not just with skill, but with love. Verlia was truly the life of the party. She loved to sing and would often make up her own songs, filling her home and the hearts of those around her with laughter and joy. Her playful spirit, sense of humor, and ability to bring light into any room made her unforgettable. She had a rare gift of making everyone feel welcome, valued, and loved.
Many years ago, she was a proud member of the RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program), faithfully giving her time in service to others and reflecting the servant’s heart she carried throughout her life.
Above all, Verlia was a devoted Christian and a longtime member of First Freewill Baptist Church. Her faith was the foundation and guiding light of her life. She walked closely with the Lord, extending grace freely, loving others deeply, and living as a reflection of Christ’s compassion. She prayed faithfully for her family and trusted God in every season. Her faith gave her strength, peace, and hope, and her family finds comfort in knowing she is now at home with her Savior—healed, whole, and at rest.
The family would like to express their deepest and most heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers and staff at Columbia Cottage. Your compassion, gentleness, and faithful care meant more than words can express. You did not simply care for her—you loved her. You brought dignity, comfort, and peace to her days, and your kindness will never be forgotten.
The family would also like to extend their sincere gratitude to Gentiva Hospice, especially Brittany, Jessica, and Garry, for the compassionate and attentive care you provided during her final season of life. Your kindness, professionalism, and gentle presence brought comfort not only to Verlia, but to all who loved her. A very special thank you is extended to Joey with Home Health, who became more than a physical therapist—he became a trusted friend to the family. Your care, compassion, and friendship will always be remembered and deeply appreciated.
Verlia will be remembered as a woman of deep faith, endless love, and joyful spirit. She was a steady source of strength, comfort, and encouragement to her family. Though her absence leaves an ache in the hearts of those who loved her, her legacy of faith, love, kindness, and devotion will live on for generations. Well done, good and faithful servant.
